Netflix’s Gears of War Adaptation Enters New Phase with David Leitch Attached
Hollywood, August 2025 — The long-discussed Gears of War movie is no longer just a rumor. Netflix and game studio The Coalition have confirmed that development is underway, with renowned action director David Leitch in talks to direct and produce the project.
According to SuperHeroHype, Leitch and his producing partner Kelly McCormick revealed that the screenplay is actively being written by Jon Spaihts, best known for Dune and Prometheus (superherohype.com). McCormick described the process as “really exciting,” pointing to strong support from Netflix and The Coalition.
Polygon also notes that Leitch’s track record—John Wick, Bullet Train, and Deadpool 2—makes him a strong candidate to capture the fast-paced combat and gritty world of Gears (polygon.com).
The live-action film will debut as a Netflix exclusive, but it’s not the only project in the works. An adult animated series is also in development, giving fans multiple ways to experience the franchise outside of gaming (as.com).
Meanwhile, gamers won’t be left waiting. Gears of War: Reloaded, a remastered version of the original game, launches tomorrow—August 26, 2025—for Xbox, PC, and PlayStation 5. And in 2026, the brand-new prequel title Gears of War: E-Day will arrive to mark the franchise’s 20th anniversary (windowscentral.com).
With Leitch’s vision, Spaihts’ storytelling, and Netflix’s global reach, this could be the first true breakthrough in bringing Gears of War from console
to screen.
